Legal Aid

Crossmans offer Public Funding (Legal Aid) in the Matrimonial/Family Department.

Note: Public Funding is only available in our Matrimonial/Family Department and through the Cambridge Office.

There are different levels of funding available and in brief these are as follows:-

Legal Help and Help at Court

This is subject to a financial eligibility test. When you attend the office for an appointment we can assess you. This level of funding will cover for example a non-defended divorce and advice in respect of any issue arising from a separation. It can also cover advice in relation to cohabitee disputes and children matters.

Family Mediation

If you are eligible for mediation you can obtain advice and assistance from our Matrimonial/Family Department as long as you are financially eligible. It is only available if you are actively participating in Family mediation or have successfully reached an agreement as a result of Family Mediation and you require legal help.

Legal Representation

If you are eligible and your case requires further investigation or you need to issue a Court application you may apply for this level of funding. This will cover representation in Court proceedings but is likely to be subject to a financial limit and you may also be subject to a limit in the amount of work we can do on your behalf.

Statutory Charge

If you obtain Legal Funding this does not necessarily mean that you will have nothing to pay. This is because if you receive or keep (recover or preserve) money or property in legal proceedings, then Legal Funding is like a loan. It does not apply to all types of disputes and you will be fully advised if applicable to you.
